2015 – 2017 Officers
(President) Helen Purvis
Helen Purvis served as President of the Tallahassee Garden Club from 1995-1997 and is proud to be able to serve the members as President again. Being a member of TGC for over 40 years has given her the gift of many, many friends and wonderful and educational opportunities. She is a Master Flower Show Judge. She has served on the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. Board of Directors in various capacities as Roadside Beautification Chairman, Birds Chairman, currently serves on the Scholarship Committee and is the registrar for SEEK (Save the Earth’s Environment through Knowledge) conference for high school students held annually. She has served as District III Director and currently serves as Treasurer for District III. She is a founding member of Magnolia Circle.
She is married to James W. Purvis III, has three children, Jenny, Emily and Jim and has 8 grandchildren who keep her happily engaged on a daily basis.
One of her favorite activities in garden club is working with youth, all the way from kindergarten through high school. Digging in the dirt, measuring earthworms, arranging flowers, pulling weeds, interviewing scholarship applicants – all of these are educational opportunities to show children that “they are the future.”
“One of my goals for the next two years is to share the joy of garden club work with new and current garden club members. If I can do this, then everything else will fall in line.”
(First Vice President) Beth Trotman
Beth is a Tallahassee native, and she and her late husband, Wilbur, raised their three children here. She is also a proud grandmother of four. She earned both her bachelor’s and her master’s degrees from Florida State University. Gilchrist Elementary was her working home for many years, and upon retirement she became the House Director for Pi Beta Phi at Florida State. Throughout her professional working career, she also volunteered in scouting, Leon High School booster organization, and taught Bible School and Sunday school at her church, Faith Presbyterian. She was also the president of Florida Beta of Pi Beta Phi House Corporation Board for over fifteen years.
Beth is a member of Babies Breath garden circle. The position of 1st Vice President is her first as an officer of Tallahassee Garden Club. Happily retired for the second time, she is looking forward to learning more about gardening. Promoting the Tallahassee Garden Club throughout the community is her goal and through this bringing new members into the club.

(Third Vice President) Andrea Willett
Andrea joined the Iris Circle of Tallahassee Garden Club in 2009, several years after she retired from her education career. She has served on the awards and horticulture committees for her circle and as circle chair. At the club level, she has been co-chair for the annual Spring Bazaar for multiple years, and chaired the committee that rewrote the recently enacted bylaws and standing rules. During the last election cycle, she served as Corresponding Secretary for the club. She continues to enjoy the camaraderie and shared knowledge of both her circle members and the wider circle of club members.
She and her husband, Michael, have one son who teaches in the Leon County Public School system. Andrea also currently volunteers as a board member for the local chapter of USA Dance, a ballroom dancing association. She and Michael enjoy ballroom dancing and traveling.
(Treasurer) Jo Bowman
Jo was delighted to receive membership in the Tallahassee Garden Club and Mimosa Circle as a retirement present in 2013. Jo enjoys vegetable gardening and puttering in her yard. She is an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church, was a public school kindergarten volunteer this past year, and takes advantage of several exercise classes at Premier Health and Fitness.
(Recording Secretary) Libby Penrod
Libby Penrod, retired after 42 years as a nurse, married to John for 51 years, parents of 3 fine children, grandparents of 3. Member of Sweet Bay Circle, active in TGC for about 10 years, serving as chairman of Sweet Bay Circle,chairman of the gardening project at HOPE Community,TGC publicity committee,kitchen renovation committee and currently TGC recording secretary. Passionate about any kind of gardening and loves to help kindle an interest in gardening others.
(Corresponding Secretary) Erica Chatham
Erica enjoys the variety of programs and events at TGC; there is always something to learn or do. Her only regret is that she didn’t join sooner. She has been a member for five years, serving on the board as co-chair of the membership committee from 2013-15. For the upcoming calendar, she will serve as the Corresponding Secretary and Magnolia Circle program co-chair and first VP. Although retired from teaching, Erica still has a soft spot for youth programs, especially the youth gardening program and mentoring our newest circle, Gardenia. These programs are a great excuse to spend quality time with garden club friends. This should be a wonderful year of programs and events for all our circles!
(Board of Trustees Chairman) Sue Griner
Sue has been a member of Mimosa Circle since the “turn of the century” and has served as Mimosa’s chairman and co-chairman for several terms. Her service to the Club includes having been a member of the Cookbook committee and chairman of the “Tasting Tea,” the introductory kickoff of the Club’s very poplar cookbook Savory and Sage.
In addition to her active involvement in the Tallahassee Garden Club, Sue has served in leadership positions in several civic and religious organizations, including Springtime Tallahassee, Highgrove Homeowners Association, Charter Club and Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity. She is an active member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church where she is President of New Horizons Sunday School Class and chairman of the Hospitality Committee. A graduate of both FSU and the University of Georgia, she is a loyal “Nole-Dawg,” despite husband Jim’s Gator allegiances.
Married to Jim, an attorney, they have one son Reynolds, and enjoy spending time as a family watching sports and playing with Daisy, their Beagle.
(BOT Treasurer) Marilyn Larson
Marilyn has been a member of Tallahassee Garden Club since 2009 and an active member of Coreopsis Circle, where she presently serves at Treasurer.
She has just completed two years (2011 – 13) as chair of the Caladium Bulb fundraiser for TGC. In addition to her Garden Club activities, she is a Certified Master Gardener and works with 4-H Youth horticulture group. When not working in her yard, she assists in maintaining St. Stephen Lutheran Church grounds, where she is an active member. She is President of her neighborhood association, member of Capital Tiger Bay Club, Economic Club of Florida and serves on the Membership Committee for Capital Women’s Network.
She has one son, Thad, daughter-in-law Martha and 5 year old grandson, Seth, who reside in Tallahassee. Sharing her love of gardening are her two yard cats and her long-time partner, Fleet Pride.
(BOT Secretary) Glenda Todd
Glenda Todd joined Jonquil Garden Circle when she was a student at FSU. After graduation she moved around the country with her husband, Richard, and son, Robert. They learned to appreciate the lush, tropical beauty of south Florida to the cool, arid environment of southern California and its unique landscape options. But for Glenda, the return to Tallahassee and Jonquil Garden Circle has given her the opportunity to bloom where she is happy to be planted.

(BOT Grounds Trustee) Lana Arnold
A former Past President and Circle Chair of the Tallahassee Garden Club, Grounds Trustee Lana Arnold’s favorite volunteer job is actually gardening. She is a ten year Master Gardener and works regularly in the Leon County Extension Office David Marshall Demonstration Garden. She uses the knowledge gained from her Master Gardener volunteer work to prepare, plant and plan the extensive grounds and gardens of the Tallahassee Garden Center. Watch for the completion of the new Garden Gazebo dedication in the fall with lighting and planting in the memory of Past President Jane Price as well as all other past presidents.
Lana Arnold also serves on the Statewide Master Gardener Advisory Committee, Leon County Master Gardener Continuing Education Committee and the Leon County Extension Office Advisory Committee, She is a Nationally Certified Flower Show Judge and Chair of the Fun with Flowers program for the garden club. She is the immediate past Recording Secretary and Roadside Beautification Chair of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. Also, she is a frequent speaker at nurseries, garden club horticulture programs, other garden related groups and home owner associations. She is retired from thirty-two years of service to the State of Florida. Married to Dwight Arnold for forty-two years, she is the proud mother of one daughter and three Chihuahuas, not including one grand dog, Tippy, a Chihuahua, of course.
